  • Capcom: Resident Evil 6 sales ‘certain’ to fall short

Resident Evil 6 shipped over 4.5 million copies at launch, but this strong debut could not be sustained. As a result of this, and other factors, Capcom is lowering its company-wide revenue and income expectations for its fiscal year ending March 31, 2013.

“In the Digital Contents business, sales of the major new title Resident Evil 6 were initially strong but subsequently weakened. As a result, sales for this title are certain to fall short of the plan,” Capcom said in a statement.

Capcom was previously targeting ¥105 billion ($16.8 billion) in net sales for the year, but is now expecting that figure to be down ¥11.5 billion ($1.8 billion) to ¥93.5 billion ($15 billion). Net income was previously forecast to come in at ¥9.8 billion ($1.6 billion) for the period, but is now anticipated to total ¥6.5 billion ($1 billion), or a drop of ¥3.3 billion ($529 million).

Capcom also announced today that 3DS game Monster Hunter 4, which was previously planned to launch by March 2013, has been delayed to summer 2013. This delay was also cited as a reason for diminished company-wide sales forecasts.

Blacklight developer creating PC “psychological thriller” due in 2013 running on Epic Games’ next-generation game engine.

Blacklight: Tango Down and Blacklight: Retribution developer Zombie Studios is the second publicly known licensee for Unreal Engine 4. The company today announced that it is licensing Epic Games’ next-generation game engine to power a new PC “psychological thriller” due for release during the second quarter of 2013 (April-June).

No further details on the project are available.

Zombie Studios follows Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider publisher Square Enix in signing a deal with Epic Games to license Unreal Engine 4. That deal was described as “long-term” and “sweeping,” noting it will span multiple games from Square Enix.

Epic Games’ own Fortnite was the first game to be confirmed to run on Unreal Engine 4. It is due out sometime in 2013 exclusively for the PC.

  • Free-to-play Xbox Live game sees 1.2 million players

    December 18, 2012 9:58AM PST

Toylogic’s downloadable action game Happy Wars attracts more than 1 million players following launch in October.

Xbox Live’s first free-to-play game Happy Wars has been downloaded more than 1.2 million times worldwide, developer Toylogic announced today. The game launched in October behind a middling critical reception.

Though Happy Wars is free to play, gamers can purchase “Happy Tickets” with real-world money to upgrade their characters’ appearance and equipment. This can also be achieved by unlocking “Happy Stars” through play. Additionally, gamers must hold an Xbox Live Gold subscription ($60 per year) to download Happy Wars.

The game supports simultaneously play for up to 30 players (15 vs.15), who will take part in free-for-all battles against one another.

Happy Wars is not the only free-to-play game in development for Xbox Live. Signal Studios’ third-person role-playing game Ascend: New Gods will also be available through the platform for free when it launches in “several months.”

  • Resident Evil 6 hits PC March 22

The PC version of Resident Evil 6 will arrive March 22, 2013, Capcom announced today. The game will launch with “all console content,” as well as future content delivered through free title updates. In September, Capcom said Resident Evil 6 for PC would not ship for “some time” and promised it would not make the same mistakes as Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 6 for PC will be available as a download on March 22, with no mention made of a release at traditional retail outlets. The Steam version of the game will support cloud saving, Steam Achievements, leaderboards, and game overlay.

Capcom also announced today that Resident Evil 6 will be available via Xbox 360 Games on Demand sometime later this year. No price for this version of the game was announced.

In addition, the previously announced Resident Evil 6 title update for consoles is out today. This update unlocks Ada Wong’s campaign from the beginning and adds a co-op partner for her campaign. Additionally, the update brings new camera-adjustment options and a No Hope difficulty.

Capcom also said a new title update for Resident Evil 6 will be available January 22. It will make the Agent Hunt mode available from the start, allows for stage selection within chapters, and brings a new quick time event assist. For the full update notes, check out Capcom’s website.

Lastly, three new multiplayer modes (Predator, Onslaught, and Survivor) will be available for the Xbox 360 version of Resident Evil 6 tomorrow for $4 each or bundled together for $9. It is not clear when these modes will arrive for the PS3 or PC versions of the game.

  • Obsidian worked on Snow White prequel

    December 17, 2012 10:28AM PST

Fallout: New Vegas developer spent a year making “Dwarves” for Xbox 360 and PS3 before change of direction at Disney led to its cancellation.

Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment spent a year developing a Snow White prequel before Disney canceled it outright. Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart explained to Kotaku in a new feature that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game was to be a third-person action title focusing on Snow White’s seven pals.

Tentatively titled “Dwarves,” the game was conceived as a new chapter in the familiar story and development began in 2005. Its final scene was even planned, as Urquhart said the endgame would have players banishing the unnamed antagonist into Snow White’s mystical mirror.

“It was a lot of fun,” Urquhart said. “We feel we turned in a really cool prototype. We worked on it for about a year. It’s one of the games here that the team just loved working on. And unfortunately–which, it happens in this industry–you have changes of focus at a publisher.”

A CEO change at Disney led to a “total shift in direction,” with the House of Mouse considering the Snow White fiction to be “untouchable.” Thus, the project was cancelled, Urquhart said.

  • Accessibility a ‘key topic’ for Dark Souls II

From Software is making accessibility for newcomers a “key topic” for Dark Souls II. New game director Tomohiro Shibuya told Edge that he wants the upcoming role-playing game to provide those new to the series with a “good introduction” before going further.

“Accessibility to players who haven’t picked up Dark Souls is definitely a key topic,” Shibuya said. “Right in the beginning when players first pick up the game is something that I will definitely focus on. To not immediately throw them into Dark Souls but provide a good introduction in terms of what the game’s about and how the game should be played.”

It is Shibuya’s hope that this new introduction sequence will not only encourage those new to the series to try Dark Souls II, but also to hook them from the onset.

“Hopefully that adjustment at the very beginning of the game will help draw in players and get them addicted right away without immediately making players feel rejected [by] the game system itself,” he said.

Shibuya singled out Dark Souls’ covenant system as something he would like to alter for the sequel. He said this system was “difficult to fully absorb and experience,” noting that the Dark Souls II version will be more inviting.

“Making it more accessible to players is something that I want to express… I will follow the same concept as Dark Souls, but there were a lot of hidden story elements that some players may not have caught before and I’m hoping to make some of that a little bit more clear or directly expressed to the player as well.”

In general, Dark Souls II will also be “more straightforward and more understandable,” Shibuya said previously. The game was announced during the 2012 Video Game Awards and is due out for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
