  • EA dropped from NASDAQ-100

    December 17, 2012 7:04AM PST

FIFA publisher no longer one of the 100 largest non-financial companies on American stock exchange; competitor Activision’s status unchanged.

FIFA and Battlefield publisher Electronic Arts has been removed from the NASDAQ-100, an index of the 100 largest domestic and international non-financial companies. NASDAQ’s recent re-ranking of the index pushed EA off of the list, which will become effective December 24.

Netflix, Blackberry maker RIM, and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters were also dropped. Major EA competitor Activision will remain a member of the NASDAQ-100, and is the only gaming publisher to make the list.

EA shares began the year trading as high as $21, before bottoming out at around $11 in August, and climbing back to about $15 as of this morning.

  • Kotick: Easy decision to fire Infinity Ward devs

Firing Infinity Ward top talent Jason West and Vince Zampella in 2010 was not a difficult decision for Activision CEO Robert Kotick to make. In a New York Times profile published this week, Kotick addressed the swift and severe action taken against the high-profile developers.

“You find out two executives are planning to break their contracts, keep the money you gave them, and steal 40 employees. What do you do? You fire them,” Kotick said.

Activision’s high-profile court case against West and Zampella, along with 40 other former Infinity Ward developers, was settled in May this year before it could be heard by a trial. Terms of the deal were not disclosed at the time and have not been since, though one analyst previously projected this figure to be in the tens of millions.

Elsewhere in the profile, it was revealed why the massively popular Call of Duty brand has not spawned a Hollywood adaptation. Kotick said game-to-film adaptations rarely work out and could in fact blemish the franchise. Hollywood studios have reached out to Activision, he said, though all requests thus far have been denied.

  • Microsoft creating franchise that blends games and film

    December 13, 2012 10:48AM PST

Company hiring producer to contribute to “AAA corre game” that meshes games with hollywood and TV.

Halo maker Microsoft is staffing up for a new game that “blends the best elements of games and TV/film,” according to a job advertisement spotted by Videogamer. The company is seeking an experienced producer to come aboard to contribute to the “exciting new AAA core game.”

The job ads says Microsoft aims to “add new blood” to its existing stable of franchises that includes Halo, Fable, Forza Motorsport, and Gears of War with this new series. A qualified candidate for the position will not only need to have experience shipping AAA games, but also experience with TV and film production.

Last month, Microsoft rebranded its Vancouver outfit Black Tusk Studios and said the developer was at work on “Microsoft’s next big entertainment franchise.” Before that, Microsoft hired former CBS Television executive Nancy Tellem to join as the president of the company’s Entertainment and Digital Media division. She and her team will develop “unique, compelling storytelling experiences” at a new production studio in Los Angeles, California.

  • Dark Souls II Wii U petition nets 10,000 signatures

The online petition at Change.org calling on Namco Bandai to bring Dark Souls II to the Wii U is picking up steam. The petition today crossed 10,000 signatures, a marked improvement over the 3,000 it had earlier this week.

The creator of the petition says the Wii U is a worthwhile platform for Dark Souls II for two main reasons. The first, he said, is that the Wii U’s GamePad would open up beneficial inventory management options.

The second major reason Dark Souls II should come to the Wii U, he said, is the console’s “affordability” relative to the PC and PS3, as well as online fees associated with Xbox Live. Online access for the Wii U is free, with the exception of a 50-cent charge for minors

Dark Souls II will feature a new hero, a fresh storyline, and an “unfamiliar” setting. “Epic battles with gruesome enemies” are promised, as well as a revamped server-based multiplayer mode that aims to “put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing with others.”

Dark Souls II will also be “more straightforward and more understandable,” according to new director Tomohiro Shibuya. The game was announced during the 2012 Video Game Awards last Friday.

  • Ted Price: Industry today is a ‘different world’

    December 12, 2012 7:23AM PST

Insomniac Games CEO says developers have been lucky during the past 20 years with stable industry, but things have now changed.

The video game industry in 2012 is an entirely “different world” from what it was just five years ago, Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price told VentureBeat in new interview. Responding to a question regarding whether or not he believes the industry is in dismay presently, he said no, adding that the game industry is a reflection of the wider changes happening in all of society.

“The industry reflects society right now,” Price said. “Society is evolving extremely fast in terms of how it uses technology. Our industry is experiencing that change as well. We’ve been very lucky over the last almost two decades to have a stable, predictable industry. But now we’re in a different world. That change has come upon us and everyone else in the world in the last five years. So it’s not just us. It’s the internet. It’s sales. It’s traditional media. Everything and everybody is feeling the effects of this accelerated change in our world.”

Price and Insomniac Games are currently working on multiplatform squad-based shooter Fuse. It is the company’s first multiplatform title and is due out for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during March 2013. A PC version is not planned. For more on Fuse, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.
