The first single-player “event” for Assassin’s Creed III has begun, Ubisoft announced on its website. The “Leave No Witnesses” competition tasks players will murdering as many enemies as possible in the single-player campaign.

Those who have already completed the Assassin’s Creed III campaign can replay the game and side quests to take part in the competition.

  • Halo team seeking devs with MMO experience

    November 20, 2012 11:24AM PST

Job ads for software engineers at 343 Industries seek staffers with MMO know-how to build technology services for Master Chief saga.

Microsoft has put out a call for staffers with massively multiplayer online game development experience to join 343 Industries to work on future Halo projects. Two job listings at 343 Industries were posted yesterday, both for software development engineers who will work on “building the next generation of backend services to power Halo 4 and our new game saga.”

These job listings follow additional requisitions posted last week that indicated 343 Industries was staffing up for mystery “incubation projects.” A Microsoft representative was not immediately available for comment.

If Microsoft is building a Halo MMO, it will not be the first time the company has done so. The Microsoft-owned (and now defunct) Ensemble Studios spent three years on a Halo MMORPG codenamed Titan that reportedly held a $90 million budget before it was canceled in 2007.

Microsoft shipped Halo 4 earlier this month to a warm critical reception and day-one sales of $220 million. Halo 5 and Halo 6 have been confirmed as part of the Reclaimer Trilogy, though platforms for these games have not been revealed.

Job listings from July suggest 343 Industries is at work on a Halo game for a next-generation platform. Microsoft will reportedly have its next Xbox on store shelves during the back half of 2013.

  • No Metro: Last Light for the Wii U – Report

Metro: Last Light developer 4A Games has confirmed that it will not be bringing the sequel to Nintendo’s next-generation console due to technical limitations.

Speaking to Now Gamer, 4A Games chief technical officer Oles Shishkovtsov told the publication that the Wii U has a “horrible, slow CPU”.

His colleague Huw Beynon reiterated the sentiment, telling the publication there would not be a Wii U version of Metro: Last Light, because the studio “couldn’t justify the effort required”.

“We had an early look at it, we thought we could probably do it, but in terms of the impact we would make on the overall quality of the game–potentially to its detriment–we just figured it wasn’t worth pursuing at this time,” Beynon said in the interview. “It’s something we might return to. I really couldn’t make any promises, though.

“Given the size of the team, and compared to where we were last time, just developing for the PlayStation 3 is a significant addition.”

Metro: Last Light, which is published by THQ, was initially shown on a Wii U sizzle reel during the console’s unveiling at E3 2011. It later also appeared in a leaked Blockbuster Wii U database listing.

Metro: Last Light is slated for release in early 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

  • No dedicated servers for Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 will not support dedicated servers, an Ubisoft representative said in the firm’s forums. According to the community manager, the decision is in the best interest of gamers and was made after careful consideration.

“The online experience does not support dedicated servers,” the company said. “Of course we are not trying to kill the PC community. We have simply decided on a different way of handling multiplayer. We weighed the different options against each other to see what worked best, and what we came up with worked very well even without [dedicated servers].”

Additionally, the Ubisoft representative said the decision to exclude dedicated servers for Far Cry 3 was not made over any concerns of PC piracy.

Far Cry 3 will cast players as Jason Brody, a man stranded on a strange tropical island similar to the setting of the first Far Cry. Gamers will head out into this “savage paradise” and “slash, sneak, and shoot” to survive in a world that has “lost all sense of morality.”

The game was originally targeted to launch in September, but was delayed to December 4 over the summer. For more on Far Cry 3, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

  • All ESPN video content now on Xbox Live

Sports fans who were less than pleased with the programming available through Xbox Live’s ESPN application are in luck. Microsoft has announced that Xbox Live’s ESPN video streaming app has been updated with WatchESPN support. This means all ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, Buzzer Beater, and Goal Line programming will be available.

Programming now available through ESPN on Xbox Live includes ESPN’s flagship show SportsCenter, as well as other news-heavy programs like SportsNation and Mike & Mike in the Morning. In addition, the new ESPN Xbox Live app will allow users to live-stream ESPN’s Monday Night Football each week during the NFL season.

The ESPN app for Xbox Live does come with two caveats. First, as was the case with the original ESPN Xbox Live app, users must hold an Xbox Live Gold subscription to access the content. Second, users must be a subscriber to one of ESPN’s participating cable affiliates. These include Bright House Networks, Comcast Xfinity, Midcontinent Communications, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon FIOS.

Lastly, Microsoft announced that Xbox SmartGlass support for ESPN, NBA, and SportsPicks Xbox Live apps will be available in December. More information will be shared as launch approaches.

  • BioWare asks if fans want Mass Effect prequel

    November 20, 2012 4:10AM PST

Producer Casey Hudson solicits gamer feedback regarding if next Mass Effect game should take place before trilogy or after.

It appears the next Mass Effect game is only just beginning development. BioWare executive producer Casey Hudson asked his 30,000+ Twitter followers last night if they would prefer the next Mass Effect game to be a prequel to the original trilogy or a sequel.

“Parsing through your thoughts on the next #ME game,” he wrote. “Would you be more interested in a game that takes place before the trilogy, or after?”

A follow-up to Mass Mass Effect 3 was announced in September. Just last week, BioWare revealed the project was in development at the studio’s Montreal outfit under the direction of Hudson. The game will run on Battlefield technology Frostbite and will reportedly be “very respectful” of the franchise’s history, though BioWare is pursuing “new directions” for the series with regards to gameplay and story.

  • Black Ops II patch hits PS3

    November 19, 2012 5:17AM PST

Update for Sony version of latest Call of Duty aimed at fixing lockup/freezing issues, though some still reporting headaches.

Activision has released a new patch for the PlayStation 3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, but it does not appear to have fixed what it set out to. Activision wrote in its support forums that it has launched an update aimed at fixing lockup/freezing issues, but also notes that some gamers are still experiencing the issues.

“We are doing everything we can to get to the bottom of it as quickly as possible,” the statement reads. No specific timetable was provided concerning when the new fix will be ready.

Separately, Activision also addressed issues Wii U users are reporting. The company told gamers who are experiencing lockups to make sure they have the most recent version of the game. To do this, Activision said players should make sure they have installed all patches and title updates before jumping in. These updates provide improvements to security and fixes for exploits and crashes and do not affect saved games.

  • Hitman: Absolution drops online pass

    November 19, 2012 5:35AM PST

Square Enix says it planned to launch new action game with code, but has decided to take a new approach.

This week’s Hitman: Absolution will not include an online pass. Publisher Square Enix has announced that the game’s Contracts mode was planned as being accessible only through a download code in the game’s box, but the company has had a change of heart.

Gamers in North America will automatically see the Contracts game mode from the title’s menu. Those in other regions can either redeem the code in the box or select “Buy Contracts Pass” where it will be available for free.

It is not clear what Square Enix had originally intended to charge for the Contracts game mode, though similar offers from other publishers run around $10.

Hitman: Absolution’s Contracts mode has players creating their own customized assassinations and challenging friends to beat them. For more on Hitman Absolution, check out GameSpot’s review.

  • Rockstar: Wii U, PC versions of GTAV ‘up for consideration’

Rockstar Games recently confirmed its much-anticipated open-world game Grand Theft Auto V will ship during spring 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with no mention of other platforms. That has not changed, but Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser told IGN that Wii U and PC versions have not been ruled out.

“Everything else is up for consideration,” Houser said. That’s all I can give you. The main thing is we are not… we are a third-party publisher. We’re not Nintendo, we’re not Sony, we’re not Microsoft. We love all of them in different ways. But we can do what we want wherever there’s the appropriate business opportunity and chance to find a market. If that’s on Apple we put something on Apple. Wherever it might be. I think that’s the fun in what we do. We see ourselves as a content company that uses technology. We don’t make it; we use it to make the most fun stuff.”

Houser also addressed why GTAV will not support motion-control technologies from Microsoft and Sony. He said, with regards to mini-games, that using Kinect or PlayStation Move could make the overall experience feel disjointed.

“One of the things we’re doing now, just to talk about mini-games, is making sure when you go into the mini-games and when you come out of them it feels very seamless,” he said. “It feels like part of the whole experience. If you were suddenly go, ‘This bit’s Move, that bit’s not, this bit’s Kinect, that bit’s not,’ it would feel very disjointed to us. That would be detrimental to the overall experience in exchange for a bullet point on the back of the box. That’s not very appealing to us.”

For more on GTAV, check out GameSpot’s video breakdown of the game’s second trailer (below), as well as all previous coverage.
