  • GTA V posters show spring 2013 release?

    October 28, 2012 4:49PM PDT

Photos of what appears to be a promotional poster for Rockstar’s upcoming title suggests the game will be out early next year; Xbox 360 and PS3 are the only platforms listed.

A Polish fan site has posted photos of what appear to be promotional posters for Rockstar’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto V, which seem to suggest that the game will be out early next year.

According to the photos posted on the site GTA-Five.pl (currently down), and spotted by Kotaku, Grand Theft Auto V is set to be released in spring 2013.

The photos of the posters also indicate only two platforms–Xbox 360 and PS3–with no mention of the PC or the upcoming Wii U.

Last week, Rockstar released the official artwork for the game, and promised that more details would be released in November.

It has been previously confirmed that the GameStop-owned Game Informer magazine will feature the game in its December issue.

GTA V was announced in October 2011, but the game remains largely a mystery. Some analysts expect it to be on store shelves by March 2013, while others disagree. For more on GTA V, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

  • Activision: Family Guy fans will appreciate Back to the Multiverse

Fans of the Fox TV show Family Guy are in for a treat with next month’s Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse. That’s according to Activision lead producer Andy Owen, who explained to the PlayStation Blog that making a strong licensed game is difficult, and that Activision did not cut any corners when developing the new game based on the wacky adventures of the Griffin family.

“It wouldn’t matter how much effort we put into the graphics, or the level design, or the action. If it didn’t feel like Family Guy–if it wasn’t funny, or if Stewie shouted ‘Blast!’ and it was clear we’d just hired some actor to do a mediocre Stewie impression, fans would hate it. We would hate it,” Owen said.

Back to the Multiverse is based on the Family Guy season 8 premiere episode titled Road to the Multiverse in which Stewie and Brian use a remote control to travel to parallel universes, including destinations inspired by Walt Disney, The Flintstones, and one where Christianity never existed.

According to Owen, Back to the Multiverse is stuffed with references, in-jokes, and tributes to the episode and to the series itself. The game even includes a Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm-Flailing Tube Man in-game item, he confirmed.

Owen also added that what allowed Activision to create an authentic Family Guy experience in Back to the Multiverse was the company’s “incredible amount of access” to the actual Family Guy production team. The show’s writers Mike Desilets and Anthony Blasucci penned the game’s script, and dialogue for the title was provided by creator Seth MacFarlane and the rest of the show’s voice talent.

“This is unmistakably Family Guy, from top to bottom,” he said.

Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse will be the first console game set in the cartoon universe since the 2K Games-published Family Guy in 2006. That game was developed by High Voltage Software and shipped for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PSP. It featured the original voice cast of the TV series, including MacFarlane.

Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse follows Family Guy Online, which is a free-to-play PC title currently in beta. Back to the Multiverse is currently in development at Heavy Iron Studios and will release for Xbox 360 and PlayStation in North America on November 20. A launch in Europe will follow on November 23.

  • Gangnam Style, Call Me Maybe coming to Dance Central 3

Dance Central 3 will add Psy’s incessantly popular “Gangnam Style” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s chart-topping hit “Call Me Maybe” as downloadable content, Harmonix has confirmed to Joystiq.

The two songs, as well as tunes from Justin Bieber, One Direction, and LMFAO will also be available for the dancing game sometime down the road. No prices were announced for the songs, but Harmonix said the tracks will include “authentic choreography.”

“Gangnam Style” debuted on YouTube in July and has amassed over 500 million views, becoming the site’s third most-viewed video in history. The song currently sits in the number two position on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Just last week, Ubisoft announced that “Gangnam Style” would appear in its own dancing game, Just Dance 4.

Dance Central 3 launched last week to a warm critical reception. GameSpot’s review praised its dance routines, noting that they appeal to beginners and experts alike. Additionally, Dance Central 3’s new Party Time mode and decade-spanning soundtrack helped it earn critical plaudits.

  • Walking Dead shooter adds subtitle

    October 26, 2012 5:23AM PDT

Activision’s shooter rebranded as The Walking Dead: Survival Instincts; coming to Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in 2013 from Terminal Reality.

Activision’s The Walking Dead first-person shooter has a new name. A post on AMC’s website reveals the project has added a subtitle, becoming The Walking Dead: Survival Instincts.

The game was announced in July and is based on AMC’s The Walking Dead TV series. Survival Instincts will be set in rural Georgia and focus on brothers Daryl and Merle Dixon. Players will be able to choose whether to confront the undead head-on or attempt to avoid detection.

Survival Instincts is currently in development at Terminal Reality. That studio’s previous credits include Atari’s Ghostbusters: The Video Game, as well as Majesco’s BloodRayne and BloodRayne 2. The company’s most recent release was Kinect Star Wars.

Survival Instincts is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

  • Assassin’s Creed gets official clothing line

Next week, gamers can not only pick up Assassin’s Creed III at retail, but they can also dress themselves in clothing based on the franchise. Musterbrand has launched an official Assassin’s Creed clothing line, which offers various cardigans, coats, and long- and short-sleeve shirts.

The most expensive offering is the “AC DNA Coat” (at right), which sells for £162, or about $260. Other items included in the virtual marketplace include a “Kingdom Knit Jacket” and an “Ottoman Long Cardigan.”

This is not the first time a game franchise has been used to sell clothing. Earlier this year, Square Enix teamed with men’s fashion magazine Arena Homme+ for a promotion that saw Final Fantasy characters Lightning, Noel, Snow, Sazh, and Hope modeling Prada attire.

Musterbrand also sells clothing based on the Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Hitman, and Metal Gear Solid franchises.

Assassin’s Creed III is due out October 30 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A PC release will follow on November 20, with a Wii U version that is “exactly the same” as its console cousins is out as a launch title for the system on November 18.

  • Assassin’s Creed III breaks Ubisoft’s preorder records

Assassin’s Creed III ships next week with lofty expectations, but it is already breaking records. Ubisoft announced today that the new stealth-action game is the company’s most preordered game in its history, surpassing previous record holder Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

What may have contributed to the uptick in reservations is that Assassin’s Creed III will be available on four platforms (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U), whereas Revelations shipped for three (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC).

Ubisoft also updated life-to-date sales for the Assassin’s Creed series today. The franchise has now sold over 40 million copies worldwide, the company said, though no specificity was provided as to how those sales are distributed among the numerous games in the series.

Assassin’s Creed III is due out for Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 30. A Wii U release is slated for November 18 day-and-date with the system and a PC launch will round out the bunch on November 20. For more on Assassin’s Creed III, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

  • Halo 4 Microsoft’s most expensive game

    October 25, 2012 11:35AM PDT

Studios boss Phil Spencer says Microsoft spent more money making new sci-fi shooter than it has developing any other game.

If Halo 4 is a bust, it won’t be for lack of trying. Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer told Polygon that the company has spent more money making Halo 4 than it has developing any other game in the company’s history.

“Absolutely. Nothing’s even close,” he said.

Spencer added that the Halo series, which he estimated to be a three billion dollar franchise, is the company’s “most important entertainment product.” Some of Microsoft’s other major franchises include Forza, Fable, and Banjo-Kazooie.

Halo 4 is due exclusively for Xbox 360 on November 6 worldwide. The game is a direct sequel to 2007’s Halo 3 and is the first numbered entry in the series developed outside of Bungie Studios. It is the first installment in the Reclaimer Trilogy, which will span Halo 5 and Halo 6.

A recent Nielsen study found Halo 4 to be the most anticipated holiday 2012 title for Xbox 360 owners.

  • Grand Theft Auto V official artwork released

Rockstar Games today continued the slow-drip of Grand Theft Auto V information. The company has released the first official artwork for the game, which is titled “Pest Control.”

The scene (at right) shows off two men in gas masks wielding automatic weapons emerging from the back of a van. The shot appears to be based on the same scene that appeared in the game’s debut trailer, embedded below.

The image suggests the men are preparing to enter the “Anna Rex” store in the background. “Anna Rex” is a fictional clothing store that appeared in Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

Additionally, Rockstar said gamers can expect “lots of info” on GTA V sometime in November. It has been previously confirmed that the GameStop-owned Game Informer magazine will feature the game in its December issue.

The most recent GTA V news came last week, when Rockstar called on fans to write in with their feedback regarding Crews. Prior to that, the company released new screenshots for the game in August. Rockstar has kept quiet on the game since.

GTA V was announced in October 2011, but the game remains largely a mystery. Some analysts expect it to be on store shelves by March 2013, while others disagree. For more on GTA V check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.
