  • Black Ops II November US sales hit 7.5 million

    NPD data reveals sales figures for latest Call of Duty; Halo 4 sells 3.2 million, Assassin’s Creed III shifts 2.9 million.

    Call of Duty: Black Ops II sold 7.5 million copies in the United States during November, according to NPD data provided to GameSpot. The game launched on November 13, and the group’s tracking period ended November 24, meaning it tallied the figure in 11 days.

    Halo 4 was November’s second best-selling game and sold 3.2 million copies during November, according to the data. Microsoft announced this week that the entire Halo series has reached a sales milestone of 50 million units worldwide.

    Another top performer for the month was Assassin’s Creed III, which sold an estimated 2.9 million units during November. Electronic Arts’ new racing game Need for Speed Most Wanted also landed on the month’s top 10 chart, selling 509,000 units.

    Overall, November total retail sales dropped 11 percent to $2.55 billion.

  • Big Boi, B.o.B. writing theme for Army of Two: Devil’s Cartel

    Hip-hop artists collaborating for “Double or Nothing” song and also will be featured in the game itself as playable characters for those who preorder.

    Electronic Arts’ upcoming shooter Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel will feature a theme song written by hip-hop artists Big Boi and B.o.B. The two are collaborating on a track called “Double or Nothing,” EA announced today, but their involvement with the game does not stop there.

    Not only are the rappers creating a song for The Devil’s Cartel, but the pair will also be featured in the game itself. Big Boi will play the role of Charles “Chuy” Rendall, while B.o.B will take on the character Anthony “Baker” Barnes. Both characters are T.W.O. agents.

    According to EA’s press release, players will need to preorder The Devil’s Cartel to receive access to Rendall and Barnes. Those who reserve the game will receive a “Hit-Makers Kit,” which gives them access to a unique Contract mission that allows them to use Big Boi and B.o.B.’s characters.

    The Devil’s Cartel is due out March 26 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For more, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

  • BioShock Vita possible ‘if stars align’

    Irrational Games’ creative director Ken Levine says PS Vita version of franchise is “in the hands of business people right now.”

    The BioShock game for PlayStation Vita is no closer to release, but it’s also not been scrapped entirely. Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine told IGN this week that the game is still possible, but its fate is not up to him.

    “That is in the hands of business people right now,” Levine said. “It’s something I’m still interested in, and people ask me that all the time. Right now I’m just sort of waiting to see what the business people come up with, and that’s sort of out of my hands at this point. That’s something that I think has a lot of potential. The game idea we have has a lot of potential. It’s just a question of [if] their stars all align.”

    Levine announced BioShock for PS Vita during Sony’s 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing. Months later, the developer said the game is still “in the paper design stage,” and it would not be a port of BioShock Infinite or a rehash of the first two BioShock games.

  • BioWare had Bond-meets-Bourne RPG in the works – Report

    BioWare reportedly had a James Bond-meets-Jason Bourne spy-themed role-playing game in the works in 2009, but it was not meant to be. Former BioWare producer Trent Oster told Eurogamer all about the project, revealing first that it had a working title of “Agent,” the same as Rockstar Games’ previously announced PlayStation 3-exclusive project.

    According to Oster, the concept of the game was to “do the other half of GoldenEye,” in that it was planned to show more than the familiar guns-blazing side of James Bond

    “He’s a suave manipulator, he’s a talented martial artist, he’s a secret agent. We wanted to cross that 007 with Jason Bourne, where he’s been modified in some way; you’re not sure what, but he’s definitely deadly,” Oster said.

    To achieve this, Oster said it was BioWare’s aim to focus on acting.

    “We really wanted to be very high drama, very intense scenes,” Oster said. “I always think of the scene in the second Bourne movie where Jason Bourne’s choking the guy out with a book and he’s right in his face and it’s this very intense moment. That was one of the key things we wanted to carry off.”

    Ultimately, though, Oster said the project was short-lived, because “EA didn’t believe in” the idea. “And if the company’s not behind it, it doesn’t matter how hard you struggle, you just can’t make it happen.”

    Oster is now the creative director at Overhaul Games, and recently oversaw the development and release of Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. The developer added that he would not be very excited to return to AAA development.

    “I look at the triple-A space and I liken it to a knife fight in a back alley: there’s no way to come out without some serious wounds,” Oster said. “The bets are so big now; it’s $30 million, $40 million to make a triple-A console title. You’ve got to license the engine, you’ve got to have a 100-man team, you’ve got to work for three to four years to make it happen.”

  • Crysis 3 due February 19

    Crytek’s new shooter arriving this winter; From Hell director tapped for video series “The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3.”

    Gamers awaiting Crysis 3 now have a date to circle on their calendars: February 19. That’s the day Crysis 3 arrives in North America, followed by a February 21 launch in Europe.

    In addition to announcing the release date for Crysis 3, Electronic Arts revealed that it has tapped From Hell and Dead Presidents director Albert Hughes for a new online video series called “The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3.”

    The program is to “set the stage” for Crysis 3 by introducing players to weapons, enemies, locations, and gameplay features that will be featured in the new game. According to the announcement, Hughes was “intimately involved” with the development team at Crytek for “The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3,” which was created entirely using in-game assets rendered by CryEngine 3.

    Crysis 3 is a first-person shooter set in 2047 New York that casts players as Prophet, a supersoldier seeking vengeance. For more, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

  • NPD: Black Ops II tops declining November

    The NPD Group reported United States industry sales for the month of November today, revealing Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the best-selling game of the month that saw overall year-over-year declines. Rounding out the top five best-selling games of November were Halo 4, Assassin’s Creed III, Just Dance 4, and Madden NFL 13.

    Overall, total software sales slid 11 percent to $1.46 billion compared to $1.65 billion a year ago. Hardware also took a hit during the month of November, with sales in this category dropping by 13 percent to $838.9 million, down from $962.2 million this time last year. Though sales across the board are down, NPD analyst Liam Callahan cautioned that these do not nearly represent the entire consumer spend on games.

    “These sales figures represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software, and accessories, which account for roughly 50 percent of the total consumer spend on games,” Callahan said in a statement. “When you consider our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales in November such as used and rentals at $207 million, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including microtransactions, subscriptions, mobile apps, and the consumer spend on social network games at $410 million, we would estimate the total consumer spend in November to be over $3.1 billion.”

    Callahan also made a specific point to compare November 2012’s results with those of November 2005, when the industry began to transition between console generations. When compared, retail sales are up 97 percent in 2012 over 2005, which “really demonstrates the long-term health of retail sales even as many platforms are quite late in their life cycles,” he said.

    Additionally, November saw the smallest year-over-year decrease in terms of total dollar and unit sales this year. Callahan said this is a sign of momentum as the holiday season continues to ramp up.

    Specifically concerning software, November’s declines are tied with August 2012 for the smallest year-over-year decrease thus far this year. And notably, half of all software dollars sold during the month were attributed to the Xbox 360, Callahan said.

    With regard to hardware, Callahan said November 2012 represented the lowest hardware decline for dollar sales thus far this year. He also sounded off on the recent launch of the Wii U, noting its performance is tracking better than the original Wii in 2006.

    “The much anticipated launch of the new Wii U console brought in more dollars than the Wii launch in November 2006, up 21 percent from that launch month,” Callahan said. “With an average price 35 percent higher for the Wii U at launch compared to the Wii, this is an example of how consumers are willing to come out and spend when they see the value of the product.”

    Bright spots for hardware in November were the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo DS. The PS Vita saw the second-highest month of sales on a unit basis in November since the device launched in February this year. Callahan said the uptick in sales can be attributed to the numerous bundles that Sony offered in the month.

    As for the DS, Callahan said it was the only platform to increase in hardware sales year-over-year.

    NPD did not release specific sales figures for hardware, but Microsoft itself announced that total Xbox 360 console sales hit 1.26 million during November, fueled in part by 750,000 system sales during Black Friday week alone. The total 1.26 million figure is down from the 1.7 million sold this time last year.

    Microsoft also said that total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in November (hardware, software, and accessories) totaled $1.2 billion. This is more than any other console in the United States, Microsoft said.

    Separately, Nintendo announced sales for its own hardware and software. The company has now sold 425,000 Wii U units in the US (up from 400,000), falling short of the original Wii’s first-week total of 475,000. New Super Mario Bros. U sold in excess of 243,000 units during the month, and was attached at nearly 60 percent of all Wii U sales.

    The Nintendo 3DS sold nearly 540,000 units during the month, bringing its total to close to 6.5 million units life-to-date in the US. Mario Kart 7 also reached a milestone during November, becoming the second 3DS game to cross 2 million units sold in the US.

    As for the aging original Wii, that system sold 420,000 units during the month, bringing its total US sales figure to over 40 million. The original Nintendo DS sold 370,000 systems in November, with Nintendo expecting the hardware line to cross 53 million life-to-date unit sales in the “next few days.”

    Concerning accessories, sales in this department dropped 8 percent to $280.9 million, down from $305.3 million last year. Though accessories overall took a hit, Activision’s Skylanders franchise was booming during the month. Skylanders unit sales both of the original and new entry Skylanders Giants rose 250 percent compared to November 2011.

  • Guitar Hero 7 canceled – Report

    A new Guitar Hero game was in development at Activision subsidiary Vicarious Visions until early 2011, when the publisher killed the project mid-development, a source has told Kotaku. The game was going to be different than 2010’s most recent entry Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, in that it was planned as a return-to-roots guitar-focused game. No compatibility for drums, bass, microphones, or any other peripherals was planned. It was all about the guitar.

    The plastic guitar for Guitar Hero 7, or whatever it was to be called, was going to have the classic Guitar Hero buttons on the neck (as well as a new button) and six actual strings where the strum bar was in past games.

    Prototypes of the guitar were made, the source said, but they did not meet performance expectations and proved too expensive to produce.

    “The strings were unresponsive and loose, and the guitars cost a fortune to make,” the source said. “No one could figure out a way to make it so your average Joe could buy one.”

    The source said development on the project began well, with an early demo for the game proving to be ambitious and compelling. Every time music changed in a significant way in a song, the venue’s aesthetics would change, too. This was one of the core ideas for the new game. However, the project went south quickly when real development actually began, the source said.

    Vicarious Visions elected to build Guitar Hero 7 from the ground up, deciding to forgo the series’ familiar art style and characters for an entirely new approach. Additionally, the studio’s “big ambitions” across the board proved too far-reaching to follow through on. What’s more, the soundtrack was not up to snuff.

    “When the songs started coming in, a great sense of dread came about everyone with an active brain,” the source said. “The game had all of the worst hits from the 1990’s. They realized that, with our lack of budget and time, they couldn’t get quality music so they bought bargain basement music like ‘Closing time’ and ‘Sex and Candy.’ There were some songs in there that had been used at least three times in the Guitar Hero franchises before.”

    Guitar Hero 7 saw its last days when Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg visited the studio. He saw the progress that had been made and after he returned from his trip, development was halted and members of the development team were let go.

    The most recent entry in the Guitar Hero series was 2010’s Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. Activision officially put the franchise in hiatus in 2011, making clear that Guitar Hero was not dead, but rather taking time to reinvent itself before returning.

  • Resident Evil 6 ‘Siege’ mode coming later

    Capcom confirms gametype previously planned to launch with first DLC this month now slated for sometime in the future.

    Resident Evil 6’s Siege mode will be available “at a later date,” Capcom has confirmed with GameSpot. Further details on the content’s price and availability will be shared in the future.

    The Siege mode for Resident Evil 6 was announced in September as being part of the first downloadable content for the game. However, Capcom made no mention of it yesterday when revealing this expansion would arrive December 18 for Xbox 360.

    Instead, Siege was replaced by a previously unannounced Onslaught mode. If Siege mode remains in its original form, it will have one side protecting a single non-playable character pitted against enemies attempting to kill that NPC.

  • Trials Evolution sells 1 million

    RedLynx’s downloadable racing game reaches platinum status eight months after launch; new Riders of Doom DLC inbound.

    Trials Evolution has sold more than 1 million copies on Xbox Live, publisher Ubisoft and developer RedLynx have announced. The game released in April on Microsoft’s console and needs to sell an additional 1 million copies if it wishes to reach sales of its predecessor, Trials HD. That game has sold 2 million copies, but notably, that figure includes sales of the game and its two expansion packs.

    In addition to announcing sales for Trials Evolution, Ubisoft also revealed that the second wave of DLC for the game will release later this month. The Riders of Doom expansion follows October’s Origin of Pain content and will cost $5 at launch.

    The Riders of Doom DLC adds 40 new tracks to the game, including a new environment inspired by the end of the world. A new vehicle–the Banshee–will also be up for grabs in the expansion, as well as “hundreds” of new editor objects for the game’s level editor.

  • Fable II returns to Xbox Live

    Microsoft apologizes for disappearance of Lionhead’s RPG from online story, says “isolated issue” has been resolved.

    Fable II has returned to availability on Xbox Live following its unexplained disappearance earlier this week. A Microsoft representative told GameSpot that an “isolated issue” affected the availability of Lionhead Studios’ role-playing game on Games on Demand.

    “We have resolved the issue and the game is once again available. We apologize for any inconvenience this caused,” the statement reads.

    A GameSpot reader initially tipped the news yesterday, saying Fable II had mysteriously vanished. This person also said those who had previously purchased the game but deleted it, were not able to re-download it. This is no longer the case.
