  • Black Ops II tops UK chart

    November 19, 2012 2:54AM PST

Latest Call Of Duty pushes Halo 4 from the top of the UK chart; Xbox 360 version takes 60 percent of sales.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops II has entered the UK charts at number one, pushing out last week’s champ Halo 4. The Xbox 360 version of Black Ops II proved to be the most popular, with 60 percent of sales. The PlayStation 3 took just 38 percent. The Vita version of the game, Black Ops Declassified, debuted at number 16.

It’s no surprise to see Black Ops II at the top of the UK charts. Last week, publisher Activision revealed that the game has generated half-a-billion dollars in day-one revenue. That’s a marked increase over Modern Warfare 3, which took home $400 million in day-one revenue.

The Sims 3: Seasons’ number nine spot marks the only other new entry in this week’s top 10. Some releases that didn’t quite make it include Sony’s Wonderbook, which entered at 25; Codemaster’s F1 Race Stars, which entered at 26; and Sega’s Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, which entered at 27.

  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 revealed

EA Sports has announced Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14, revealing that Woods will be joined by retired American golf icon Arnold Palmer on the game’s cover. Palmer is one of the most decorated golfers in history, recording 92 professional victories, including seven Majors.

Palmer will be a playable character in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14, but he is no stranger to the franchise. The golfer also appeared in the 2005 and 2006 versions of the game.

Golfers making their digital debut in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 include PGA and LPGA standouts like Keegan Bradley, Bud Cauley, Stacy Lewis, and Lexi Thompson. In all, the game will feature more than 25 professional golfers.

EA Sports will reveal a special European version of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 box art in the time ahead. It was not announced which golfers will appear on this iteration.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 is in development at EA Tiburon in Orlando, Florida. No release date or platforms for the game were announced, though box art for the game indicates it will ship for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with Kinect and PlayStation Move support, respectively.

EA Sports also announced retailer-specific preorder bonuses for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14. They are listed below.

  • Black Ops II nets $500 million in 24 hours

Call of Duty: Black Ops II generated half-a-billion dollars in day-one revenue. Activision announced today that 24-hour sales for Treyarch’s new Call of Duty game reached $500 million worldwide, according to sell-through information and internal company estimates.

Black Ops II cruised past Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which was the previous top-performing Call of Duty game to date at $400 million in day-one revenue. Importantly, though, Modern Warfare 3’s figure only accounts for North American and European sales, while Black Ops II’s factors in all regions. Additionally, Black Ops II easily surpassed first-day sales of the original Black Ops, which netted a then-record $360 million.

In a statement, Activision CEO Robert Kotick said life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have now surpassed worldwide box office revenue for the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises.

Despite the success of Black Ops II, Kotick reiterated the feelings of forward-looking caution he expressed last week during a financial call. “Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013,” he said.

Additionally, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said Call of Duty is no longer a mere product, but rather an annual worldwide event.

“Call of Duty has become more than a product people buy, it’s a brand people buy into,” he said. “And every November, we do more than just the launch of a game, we kick off an annual, unofficial but worldwide phenomenon called the Call of Duty season.”

  • Major Assassin’s Creed III patch next week

    November 16, 2012 10:17AM PST

Multiplatform “Thanksgiving Patch” hitting next week fixes a range of single-player and multiplayer issues, reduces difficulty on certain chase missions.

Ubisoft will release a major patch for Assassin’s Creed III next week, the company has announced. The extensive “Thanksgiving Patch” will roll out at the end of next week for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and will address a range of issues in the game’s single- and multiplayer components.

According to the patch notes on the Ubisoft forums, the update will fix missing audio issues and squash a range of bugs related to NPCs walking in circles and players getting stuck in certain areas. Additionally, the patch will make certain chase sequences easier.

The full patch notes (which contain numerous spoilers) are available on the Ubisoft forums. It is not clear if a similar patch will be made available for the Wii U version of Assassin’s Creed III, which is due out on Sunday. A Ubisoft representative was not immediately available for comment.

  • Black Ops II sells 1M at GameStop midnight launch

    November 14, 2012 10:25AM PST

Latest Call of Duty off to quick start at specialty retailer; analyst predicts total day-one sales of 6.5-7.2 million.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is off to a hot start. GameStop president Tony Bartel said in an email to Bloomberg today that the speciality retailer sold more than 1 million copies of Treyarch’s new shooter at its midnight launch alone.

Additionally, analyst Michael Olson estimates that Black Ops II shifted between 6.5 million and 7.2 million units in day-one sales, which is on par with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s day-one haul of 6.5 million units in 2011.

The most successful Call of Duty launch to date is Modern Warfare 3, which generated $775 million in revenue during its first five days last year. Activision has not announced official sales data for Black Ops II yet.

  • Capcom: Mega Man will return

In the past two years, Capcom has canceled Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe, but that doesn’t mean the publisher is giving up on the Blue Bomber. In a Nintendo Power interview (via Rockman Corner), Capcom senior vice president Christian Svensson promised Mega Man will return.

“I can say with certainty that you’ve not seen the last of the Blue Bomber on consoles and handhelds, and, with luck, we’ll be celebrating his 50th anniversary, including all of the games you’re going to enjoy over the next 25 years,” Svensson said.

However, Capcom is not going to rush to announce any new Mega Man projects before the time is appropriate.

“That said, an issue we’ve had in the past has been talking about games and announcing them before we’re certain they’re going to come out, which unfortunately has lead to profound disappointment for many fans,” he added. “So for now, I’m going to have to stay mum about any details.”

The most recent entry in the series was Mega Man 10, which released in 2010 for Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and WiiWare.

  • Tom Hardy to star in Splinter Cell movie

Tom Hardy’s next role is Sam Fisher. Variety reports today that the Inception and The Dark Knight Rises actor has been cast as the lead role in Ubisoft’s upcoming Splinter Cell film adaptation.

The film has been in the works since 2006 and remains unassociated with a studio. The site states that Ubisoft has held preliminary talks with Warner Bros. and Paramount, though it is not clear if either outfit is pursuing the project.

Eric Warren Singer (The International) is writing the film’s script, though no director or other actors have been announced for the project.

Hardy is the second high-profile actor Ubisoft has signed to one of its upcoming films. He follows Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, Shame), who will play the lead role in the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed motion picture.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is the next entry in Ubisoft’s long-running stealth-action series. It is due out next year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more on that game, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

  • Halo 4 tops Xbox Live activity chart

    November 14, 2012 5:26AM PST

Microsoft’s new shooter tallies more unique users than Modern Warfare 3, Minecraft, and FIFA 13 to take top spot in debut week.

Halo 4 blasted off to success on Xbox Live. The latest latest Xbox Live activity chart shows Microsoft’s new sci-fi shooter tallied more unique users than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and FIFA 13 to secure the top spot for the week of November 5.

Halo 4’s status as Xbox Live’s most-played title may be short-lived. Just yesterday, Activision released Call of Duty: Black Ops II, a title predicted to be this fall’s biggest blockbuster.

The first numbered entry in the series since Bungie’s 2007 shooter Halo 3, Halo 4 minted a series-best $220 million in day-one revenue, with $300 expected for the game’s first week. For more on the title, check out GameSpot’s review.

  • Microsoft sending XBL veterans custom console

    November 14, 2012 5:51AM PST

Company sending specially designed Xbox 360 systems to those who have been Xbox Live subscribers the longest.

Longtime Xbox Live subscribers may want to be on the lookout for a delivery from Microsoft. The company has announced that it is sending custom Xbox 360 consoles (below right) to those who have “been with [Microsoft] the longest.”

It is not clear what exact qualifications a gamer must meet to be rewarded with a console. However, a document posted to All Games Beta suggests Microsoft is sending the 250GB systems–as well as a voucher for an additional year of Xbox Live–to those who have been Xbox Live subscribers since the service launched ten years ago.

Xbox Live has grown significantly since its debut in 2002. The platform currently boasts 40 million members, with Xbox Live Gold users logging an average of 84 hours on the service per month. Additionally, games are only one part of the service.

Microsoft announced in March that gamers in the United States spend more time with Xbox Live entertainment applications like Netflix and ESPN than they do playing multiplayer games.

  • Epic: Next-gen dev costs to double

Next-generation development will come at a price. Epic Games chief technology officer Tim Sweeney said at the Montreal International Game Summit (attended by GamesIndustry International) that he anticipates Epic will be able to make future platform games for “only about double the cost” of current-generation titles.

And it could have been higher. Sweeney added that Epic’s first next-gen technology demo, the 2011 “Samaritan” video, took four months and a squad of 30 developers to create. This led Sweeney to be “greatly worried” about the cost associated with this kind of development.

“If we extrapolate that into creating an entire game, we were worried that the cost would go up by a factor of three or four or even five in the next generation,” Sweeney added. “And of course, we felt that was not acceptable.”

To fight this, Epic modified its content and production tools, boosting efficiency and lessening the total development cost along the way.

Sweeney’s comments are in stark contrast to what Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick said earlier this month. The Grand Theft Auto parent publisher executive said next-generation development may not necessarily be more expensive or complicated than it is on current tech.

“Do we believe the titles to be a whole lot more expensive to make for next-gen? And the answer is we do not,” Zelnick said. “In many instances, we believe that it may be somewhat easier to make titles for next-gen, depending on how the technology comes together.”
