  • Playstation 4 vs Xbox One: Killzone

Killzone has been a franchise that Sony has trumpeted since the days of the Playstation 2 as a ‘Halo Killer.’ Killzone as a series has never quite lived up to those lofty heights – but with six titles spanning four systems the series has never been short of popularity. The Playstation 4 has seen Killzone: Shadowfall join the series with jaw dropping graphics, visceral action and thrilling set pieces.

Killzone: Shadowfall was a launch title for the Playstation 4, and for those people looking to buy the console this Christmas period then it can be picked up relatively cheaply as a second purchase. With a thriving online community and a lot of free content updates being sent out from the developers in the Netherlands it is a perfect time to join the fun.

Killzone is another franchise you won’t find on Microsoft’s Xbox One, and another good reason to consider the Playstation 4 this Christmas.

  • FIFA 15 Debuts At Number 1 In UK Charts

Unsurprisingly EA Sports yearly update of the FIFA franchise has debuted straight in at number 1 in the UK charts after only being released four days ago.

According to the first week sales figures, FIFA 15 units sold 15 per cent more compared to last year’s game which was arguably given better reviews.

If you look at individual formats, then FIFA 15 takes the first four rankings with it’s PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS3 versions being the most popular. Further below in the charts, Destiny comes in next after finally dropping from the top-spot and then it’s followed by Disney Infinity 2.0 and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition.

  • Xbox Live Having Problems?

The extremely popular Xbox Live has been experiencing ongoing social and online gaming issues for the past few days. The outage affects the ability for users to join other members in online games. The problems have been in more than one region, with the US, Australia and Europe being affected.

“Hi Xbox members. Are you having trouble connecting to Party Chat on Diablo 3 on Xbox One and Xbox 360? Additionally, Xbox One users, are you experiencing server unavailability issues? Us too, but we’re working alongside our partner to get these issues fixed ASAP! We’ll keep you posted when we have more information on this issue. In the meantime, thanks for staying patient.”

Apart from that, the core services are running smoothly.

  • Another Goat Game, No We’re Not Kidding

We recently posted about Goat Simulator, but the goat craze has been taken one step further and this time it’s on mobile devices. Let it Goat could be the game that follows in the footsteps of Angry Birds, Temple Run and Flappy Bird and it’s certainly one of the most addictive games on the market.

It’s a side stroller game and you basically have to get as many points as you can before your die. It was earlier this month when the hashtag #LetItGoat was trending and we could see the game pick up pace in the near future.

There’s not an awful lot to this game, but there usually isn’t with popular mobile games, otherwise people become frustrated and move on. It goes for the old school gaming look, while there are different versions currently being worked on.

  • Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics Return to Steam, Now Available for Purchase

Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics are once again available for purchase on Steam.

Bethesda announced today on its blog that it has resolved publishing issues and put the classic Fallout games back on Steam. Early this year, the games were removed from all digital distribution platforms (including Steam and GOG.com) after the rights to the games transitioned to Bethesda. According to the company, it needed to “remove existing publisher info, legal text, etc.”

With their return to Steam, minor changes have been made to the original games. Saves now have Steam Cloud support, and Fallout 1 and 2 have “default” and “classic” modes. Default mode allows for high resolutions and classic is the unmodified, original game. Fallout Tactics is unmodified, but its multiplayer is still supported via direct connection. Tactics cannot run on Windows 8.

Each game costs $10 individually and a bundle of all three costs $20. There is no word yet on if the games are returning to GOG.com. If you already own the games, they’re still in your digital library. There’s no need to buy them again.

Recently, GameSpot discussed what a new Fallout game should include. Although Bethesda has not said anything official about it, rumors suggest that the next entry in the series will be set in Boston.

  • FIFA 13 sells 12 million, Origin has 39 million members

As part of its latest financial report today, Electronic Arts announced that FIFA 13 has sold over 12 million units through its third quarter, a 23 percent year-over-year jump. In addition, FIFA 13 digital net revenue topped $100 million for the three-month period ended December 31, up 98 percent compared to last year.

EA’s Origin digital platform now has 39 million members, 17 million of which which are mobile users, the company said. By comparison, Valve has more than 50 million members. In all, EA has signed agreements with 86 independent developers for Origin.

Overall, EA’s digital business saw gains during the quarter, hitting $407 million, compared to $377 million last year.

In total, EA posted net revenue of $922 million, compared to $1.06 billion this time last year. The company posted a loss of $45 million for the period, better than the $205 million hit the company took this time last year. EA CEO John Riccitiello called the quarter “challenging.”

“We are investing for the future wave of growth that we foresee in digital and console,” he said in a statement.

Other financial highlights for the period included the $50 Battlefield 3 Premium offering, which generated $108 million in sales and has now sold 2.9 million copies to date, up from 1.3 million last summer.

EA also called out mobile game The Simpsons: Tapped Out as a bright spot, noting it generated more than $23 million during the quarter. Lastly, the company said Dead Space 3 preorders are outpacing Dead Space 2 and Crysis 3 reservations are up 40 percent over Crysis 2.

Looking ahead, EA said it expects net revenue for its fourth quarter to land at $1.025-$1.125 billion, with net revenue for the full-year expected to hit $3.778-$3.878 billion.

During a post-earnings conference call, EA called Medal of Honor: Warfighter a “miss,” saying it sold “well below our expectations.” The company also said sales of NHL 13 are down year-on-year, due in part to the NHL lockout that was only just recently lifted.

In addition, the company commented on Star Wars: The Old Republic and its recent free-to-play switch. EA said early checks are proving positive, but it is too soon to tell if the business model change has been successful.

  • Medal of Honor franchise taking a rest

The Medal of Honor franchise is taking a break. Electronic Arts announced today that after Medal of Honor: Warfighter missed sales expectations, the series is being taken “out of rotation.”

It is not clear what this means for developer Danger Close Games. An EA representative told GameSpot this afternoon that the studio has no announced projects.

“We haven’t announced a new project for the Medal of Honor development team, although there are other projects in development in Los Angeles and throughout our other EA studios,” the company said. “Medal of Honor is a great franchise with a storied past. We recognize and appreciate the value of the franchise. We’re going to give Medal of Honor a rest while we plan its return. We haven’t made any decision on how or when it will return.”

In years past, Battlefield and Medal of Honor games have traded off releasing every year. EA did not say which franchise could replace Medal of Honor in EA’s yearly shooter rotation, though the company said more details will be shared on the next financial call in 90 days. Battlefield 4 is currently in development, with a beta to arrive later this year.

Respawn Entertainment, led by former Call of Duty designers Jason West and Vince Zampella, is currently working on a big-budget unannounced game for EA.

  • Fuse delayed

Resistance and Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games’ first multiplatform title Fuse has slipped from its intended March 2013 release date. The third-person shooter will now be released between April and June, EA has announced.

The release slip was confirmed as part of EA’s Q3 earnings report, where EA also said that sales-conquering soccer sim FIFA 13 has scored 12 million sales and Battlefield 3 Premium had notched up almost three million subscribers.

Fuse is a third-person shooter designed around four-player co-op, and it incorporates Insomniac’s iconic fondness for innovative weaponry. The game was originally announced as the cheerily-coloured Overstrike during EA’s press conference at E3 2011, only to resurface as the aesthetically darker Fuse in August 2012.

Despite the controversial art change, Insomiac has repeatedly insisted that Fuse still retains a sense of humour and fun. Speaking to GameSpot in September 2012, CEO Ted Price said the challenge for Fuse was in “having a sense of humor that isn’t campy but isn’t so subtle that players miss it. And then integrating it into real-time gameplay so players hear emergent dialogue throughout the game that’s relevant to what they’re doing but also entertaining.”

  • Sleeping Dogs: Year of the Snake information slithers online

    January 30, 2013 8:39AM PST

New footage for unconfirmed Sleeping Dogs DLC shows Chinese New Year theme.

Open-world brawler Sleeping Dogs looks set to receive a DLC pack based around the Chinese New Year, which takes place on February 10.

Neither publisher Square Enix or developer United Front Games has officially confirmed the existence of the Year of the Snake DLC, although a brief teaser trailer and a leaked PlayStation 3 Trophy list have both surfaced online.

The four Trophies (detailed on Exophase) suggest that the pack will include defusing bombs and dealing with cultists, along with gobbling up a fleet of collectibles and other secondary mission objectives.

Square Enix has released a good chunk of Sleeping Dogs DLC since its release in August 2012, including undead-themed expansion Nightmare in North Point. Sony also announced this week that the game would also be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers for February.

Sleeping Dogs was awarded a respectable 8.0 in its GameSpot review last year, with Carolyn calling the game “a fun-filled Hong Kong getaway that will leave you with many happy memories.”
